Dr Shirley Bang is a Singapore Medical Council certified Urological specialist. Prior to her current practice, she was a full time Consultant in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Shirley’s subspeciality interest is in the treatment of Urinary incontinence, Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB), Neurogenic bladder, Functional and Reconstructive surgery of the urinary system. She also has an interest in bladder rehabilitation for post-stroke, post-brain surgery and trauma patients. The procedures she performs are as follows: Male urinary incontinence procedures

Dr Shirley also performs general and oncological urological procedures. These include endoscopic surgery for stone diseases, minimally invasive surgery for urological cancers and treatment of benign prostatic conditions. Dr Shirley obtained her medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Auckland in 2004. She subsequently obtained her Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS) in 2009 and her Master of Medicine in Surgery (M.Med) in 2010. She obtained her specialist accreditation as the Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore (FAMS-Urology) in 2014. Dr Shirley did her subspeciality fellowship in three hospitals, namely the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Birmingham Women’s Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital in the United Kingdom. During her fellowship year, she performed complex incontinence and reconstructive surgeries for both male and female patients under the guidance of Dr Mohammed Belal, Dr Almallah Zaki, Dr Pallavi Latthe and Dr Paul Anderson. She also ran a twice weekly Urodynamics and Video Urodynamics clinic during her fellowship. During her time in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, she runs a busy tertiary practice and manages both simple and complex urological cases on a daily basis. She is one of only two urologists who runs a weekly Urodynamics and Video Urodynamics session in the hospital. She was instrumental in introducing Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) to the hospital in 2018. PTNS is an effective treatment for overactive bladder (OAB), particularly in patients who do not respond well to medical therapy. In addition to her hospital duties, she runs a twice monthly combined Urology-Rehab clinic at Ang Mo Kio Thye Hua Kwan Hospital for patients with neurogenic bladder after a stroke or major trauma. In addition to her daily clinical duties, she also mentors the Prostate Cancer Survival Support Group in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Shirley sits on the Executive Committee of the Singapore Society for Continence. She has also authored research papers published in respected urological journals. In view of Dr Shirley’s experience, she has been invited to present at local and regional conferences such as the Urological Association of Asia Congress and Singapore Urofair. She is also actively involved in organising talks and courses, including GP forums, Singapore Continence Week and Incontinence and Reconstructive surgery Masterclass as part of Singapore Urofair conference. As a keen teacher and mentor, she is a core faculty member of the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Urology Residency Program and also a clinical tutor for both the NTU-Lee Kong Chian and NUS-Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. As part of Dr Shirley’s drive for quality improvement and patient safety, she was part of the team that won the first price for the project entitled ‘The Urology Time-Out Script Trial’ at the 8th National Healthcare Quality Improvement Competition in 2011. This project was subsequently presented at the international Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) conference in Geneva in 2012. She has also completed a hospital quality improvement project, leading a team to improve hospital processes. Dr Shirley Bang’s wish is to provide her patients with the best possible up-to-date treatment with good outcomes while providing cost effective care at the same time.
